We had a lesson on editing techniques and practiced it by making a collage video with a topic of our own choice.

These are some of the editing skills that I've learned!

  • A cut: A visual breaking, transitioning from 1 shot to another

  • Cross cutting: Alternating between two simultaneous scenes

-> For connection or creating tension

  • Jump cut: Abrupt transition between shots of the same subject

-> Disrupt the smoothness of the scene -> used for chaotic, drunk scenes

-> A stylistic, experimental editing technique

  • J cut: When the audio of the scene enters before the picture

-> L cut: Vice versa

  • Match cut: When the visual/audio/action of the first shot matches with the second shot.

-> Shows passage of time, change of emotions,...

For the collage video, I chose to make a video about top 3 most highest buildings in Hanoi, and merge different footages on youtube together. The editing app I used was Capcut and I used basic cut, match cut to put the clips together. Because the footages were all found on youtube and I didn't get to film them myself, it's hard to edit the clips to match perfectly. Thus, I tried to include other editing techniques like edit the speed of the clips in curve graphs, reversing the clip, use fade in/out,... And here is how the final product turned out!
